Cooper's Hawk
Every so often this hawk comes around our backyard bird feeder to prey upon the songbirds. I have tried to get some good photos of it, but it is usually quite skittish and flies off before I can get in position with my camera. However, yesterday (2 February, 2010) I was able to get very close to it. I started out by taking photos from the doorway and working my way closer to it. I estimate that I was about 18 feet away when I took this photo. I snapped a few dozen photos before it flew away. I am pretty sure that it is a Cooper's Hawk, if you think that it is a different type of hawk please let me know.
If you click on the photo you will get a very large image of 26x42 inches at 72 dpi. The large image will open in a new window and depending on your browser you may need to click on it one more time to get the large view.
The photo was taken in the mid-afternoon under a partially cloudy sky. I used a Canon Rebel T1i digital camera and a 250mm telephoto lens. I gave the camera to Jennifer for Christmas and we are still learning how to use the features so for this photo the camera exposure and focus was on auto.
